Seasonal events in Rome

The main celebrations and cultural events recurring in Rome.

With its 2700 years of history, the Capital offers foreign visitors and Romans passionate about music, theater, history and culture numerous tours and events. The main arterial roads are home to high-fashion shops and noble palaces, which host important art galleries. Behind the shining facades of windows rise museums of extreme importance like the wonderful Ara Pacis and, almost everywhere, there are scattered projects that aim to enhance and bring tourists closer to artistically important areas such as the Imperial Forums or the Colosseum. Some initiatives, however, aim at celebrating the city and have a recurring character.
Natale di Roma exhibitions, initiatives and cultural events
An example of this is the * magnificent Natale di Roma * that is celebrated on April 21. The holiday is the right occasion to have free access to numerous cultural events and exhibitions, such as the “Journey to Ancient Rome” held at the Fori Imperiali, with a tour developed for the occasion directly by Paco Lanciano and Piero Angela. The celebrations for the birthday of Rome certainly do not stop here: concerts and shows are set up in the central areas of the city such as Via Petroselli and the square that hosts the famous Bocca della Verità, transformed into pedestrian zones. To these celebrations of an exquisitely cultural nature, obviously those of an institutional nature are also linked, such as the performance of the band of the Police of Rome playing in Campidoglio and the visits of the mayor to the Unknown Soldier, in Piazza Venezia.

New Year’s Eve in Rome: between Piazza di Spagna and the Circus Maximus
Rome’s birthday is not the only organized event in the Capital to pay attention to; those who want to celebrate the arrival of the New Year in the square can participate in the party organized by the municipality in the evocative and capacious setting of the Circus Maximus, to dance until 3 a.m. in the morning. In the last edition of 31st December 2017, among other things, music was available thanks to the Capitoline radio Dimensione Suono Roma. Artists from different parts of the world cheered the Romans and tourists who decided to celebrate the New Year directly in the square. Even around Circus Maximus there were events and shows that will certainly be repeated in the next editions. Likewise, the picturesque setting of Piazza di Spagna has in recent years been used for parties and events aimed at celebrating New Year’s arrival.

The Book Fair in Rome
For several years, December has been the month in which the * The Book Fair in Rome * is organized and set up in Rome, with the name “Più libri più liberi”, namely more books for more freedom.
This is an event dedicated mainly to small and medium publishers, which takes place every year at the conference center called “La Nuvola” in the area of EUR. The fair lasts for five days and offers an important springboard for emerging authors. At the same time, it represents an opportunity for all book and literature lovers to discover new works and participate in the initiatives developed by the organizers of the event. During the five days of Più libri più liberi, the fair hosts numerous personalities from the world of cinema, television, publishing, politics, music and theatre; so it is a unique opportunity to attend debates or simply get an autograph from your favorite singer or writer.

The May 1st concert in Rome
Since 1990, Rome has also hosted another major national event: a concert on May 1. This is held every year in the square of St. Giovanni in Laterano, next to the Basilica of the same name, except for some sporadic editions. It is set up by the main Italian trade unions and is a real marathon that starts in the early afternoon and ends late at night. The so called “Concertone”, so defined due to the presence of numerous guests and the huge turnout of spectators, is broadcast live every year by RAI and hosts some of the greatest performers and songwriters of the Italian and international music scene. Anyone wishing to participate will do well to go well in advance to * Piazza di St. Giovanni *, because the main arterial roads that connect it to the various areas of Rome, such as the Tangenziale Est (East ring road) could be congested or blocked. Even the nearby metro stations of Line A and C are closed for a few hours before the event starts due to safety reasons. The St. Giovanni concert is for free and on its stage, over the years, artists of the caliber of Elisa, Modena City Ramblers, Antonella Ruggiero, Jon Bon Jovi, Carmen Consoli, Biagio Antonacci, Skin, Luciano Ligabue, Gianna Nannini, Fatboy Slim and many others have performed.

The theater season in Rome
Concerts, events, exhibitions and other initiatives regulate and mark the life of the Capital. Together with the numerous proposals that from month to month take advantage of the architectural wonders of Rome, it is necessary to point out those in the theatrical field, rich in events of great importance. One of the most important theaters in the city is undoubtedly the one located in Largo di Torre Argentina. This theater for the 2017/2018 season offers shows of great value, among which we must certainly mention Barry Lyndon and the Deep Blue Sea, which will be represented in the months of October and November 2018 as scheduled, and Don Giovanni and Turandot, which will open in 2019 together with other shows. A year, it must be said, that theater lovers will find it fascinating even in the spring months, with titles like Nest di Wasps and Julius Caesar – Kill the Tyrant.
